Celebrate African music with us this Africa Month. The South African music industry and the music industry across Africa are exploding with talent on the world’s stage. Let’s explore who are the African music industry influencers and the impact they’ve had on the music world.

 

Music producers

Africa is home to world-class music producers like Kiddominant. He is a Nigerian music producer, DJ, and artist. He has worked on Beyonce’s ‘Nefertiti’ as a producer. Kiddominant has also collaborated with industry heavyweights like AKA, Davido, DJ Neptune and Wale.

A Ghanaian producer, Killbeatz, is known as the top Afrobeats producer. He works with global stars. He produced one of Ed Sheeran’s songs, called ‘Bibia Be Ye Ye’. Killbeatz has also produced Fuse ODG’s ‘Antenna’ and ‘Azonto’ tracks.

Africa is home to many entrepreneurs in the music industry that have excelled. Nahreel, the talented Tanzanian artist and music producer, has worked with top music talent like Diamond Platinumz and Vanessa Mdee. Nahreel has had a major influence on the Tanzanian music scene by helping make English-language rap popular. That wasn’t enough though. Nahreel has also created his own music label, called The Industry Studios.

 

Music moguls

Don Jazzy, the Nigerian music industry mogul, is the owner of Mavin Records. He’s multi-talented a singer, songwriter, producer and record label founder. Kanye West, D’Banj are amongst the musicians that he’s worked with to date.

US-born Senegalese musician Akon is a global music force as a singer, record label owner, and philanthropist. He became famous after he launched his ‘Trouble’ album in 2014. Akon’s ambition doesn’t stop with his own award-winning music. He signed Lady Gaga to his Kon Live label and helped launch her career.  Konvict Musik is another successful record company that he created in 2004 to which he signed hitmakers like T-Pain and P-Square. His success is reflected in his estimated net worth of $80 million.

Akon also likes to give back. He helps communities across Africa through several projects like his Akon Lighting Africa. This project aims to provide people across the African continent with electricity.  

 

Record labels

Africa is home to many record companies that have had an impact on the music industry. Mavin Records, Empire Mates Entertainment, Gallo – Tiso Black Group and Kalawa Jazmee are a handful of leading African record companies.

Other than Akon, many African artists who own/co-own record labels. Sarkodie’s Sarkcess Music, Davido’s Davido Music Worldwide, M.I Abaga’s Chocolate City, Wizkid’s StarBoy and Diamond Platinumz’ WCB Wasafi are a few of the many other successful African record labels.

The African music industry is filled with incredible talent for the world to enjoy and to inspire future generations.
