Elvis Blue opens up about new songs and 2019 album

Elvis Blue, the musician with several platinum and gold-selling albums to his name, is in the news once more with his new ‘Jou Huis’ album. His songs are a favourite for many South Africans. The JOOX team recently caught up with the award-winning artist to find out more about his recently launched 2019 album, song collaborations and his personal life. Elvis Blue had much to say.

Where did the idea for your latest album ‘Jou Huis’ come from?

“My father has been living in the States for the past 30 years and every time I phone we still speak to each other in Afrikaans because he still feels that South Africa is his home. So the idea for the album started here – to write songs, to remind you of where you come from because it is important to remember who you are and where you come from.”

“Theuns Jordaan was nog altyd baie goed vir my.

How did you decide that Theuns Jordaan is the perfect artist to collaborate with on this album?

“Theuns Jordaan has always been very good to me. When I won Idols back in 2010 and started making music in Afrikaans, I managed to get hold of his number as I wanted to chat with some clever people within the Afrikaans industry. I sent him a WhatsApp and before I knew it I was sitting in his house and drinking a glass of wine. This is now almost 10 years ago and with time we became friends. When I wrote the song ‘Jou Huis’ there was just one person with whom I wanted to work with and that was Theuns. So I sent him another WhatsApp and he immediately said he’s on board.”

‘n Mens se huis is ‘n interessante plek. So ek het songs geskryf wat naby is by daai tipe temas.”

Is ‘Jou Huis’ the theme of the album?

“Yes. I wrote songs about what happens in one’s house for this album. A person’s house is an interesting place. It houses different kinds of relationships and dynamics. Many different things also happen in one’s home which I think plays a part in forming the person that you are. So I wrote songs that are very close to these kinds of themes.”

Dis ‘n woord waaroor baie mense praat – want waar is hierdie plek nou eintlik? Dis ‘n woord met baie lagies.”

Does ‘Jou Huis’ have more than one meaning?

“Yes. I think the word ‘house’ has many different layers. Your home can be a physical place, or it can also be in someone else’s heart. It really can be any place. I also think it is a very relevant word these days. It is a word that many people speak about. Where is this place really? It’s a word with many layers.”

Elvis Blue holds his hand to his face in reference to his new album.

How does this album differ from your previous albums?

“This album differs from my previous albums because I wrote a lot closer to my own home. I wrote a lot of songs for my wife on this album. The themes I mostly write about is more universal, but this time I wrote about things like the Outeniqua mountains and the sea – things that are a lot closer to my own home.”

‘Dit pas net nie by my nie’.

Any other collabs on the album?

“There is another collab on the album that I am very excited about. The song I wrote is called ‘Langpad’ and Snotkop also co-wrote on this song. When I first wrote this song I thought that I simply can’t sing this song. It doesn’t suit me. When I recorded it, I felt that the only way I could make it suit me better is to get Snotkop to collaborate on the song. He immediately came on board when he heard the song. It’s a really fun song and you can hear it on JOOX!”

How do you make sure you choose the right person for a song collab?

“The perfect person for a collab is all about chemistry for me. You meet many people, but with some people, you feel like you would like to hang out with them if you saw them again. This is what music is like for me. The people I would like to make music with are those people I would like to sit and enjoy a glass of wine with and Snotkop and Theuns are both those types of people for me.”

Your favourite song on the album?

“My favourite song on the album is ‘Mamma Blou’ that I wrote for my wife. ‘Mamma Blou’ has been my wife’s nickname for a quite a while. I like this song and it has a nice meaning for my wife and I.”
