Oscars® 2019, celebrating movies & music

Fans across the globe will be tuning in on the Oscars® celebrating film and the music that accompanies them. Are you a fan of movie soundtracks? Are you looking for a movie-inspired playlist of songs?

One movie made history this year

Marvel universe’ global hit and fan favourite, The Black Panther has been nominated for 7 Oscars® including Best Picture, an incredible achievement for any movie. It’s the first time that a superhero movie from either of the major comic universes has been nominated for an Oscar®. The official movie soundtrack album features local Gqom Queen Babes Wodumo’s Wololo racking up alongside an impressive list of up and coming and Grammy award-winning artists.

Musicals take the lead

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s reworking of the William A Wellman’s A Star Is Born showcases Cooper in his singing and directorial debut picked up a phenomenal 8 Academy Award® nominations. Grammy Award-winning vocal powerhouse Lady Gaga portrays a struggling singer falling for country superstar Jackson Maine. In a whirlwind love story, the music takes the lead in this fan and critic favourite.

The much anticipated Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody will be under the brightest spotlight at this year’s ceremony. Rami Malek’s critically acclaimed portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury piled up a total of 5 Oscars®. This movie’s soundtrack contributes beautifully to the film’s success and features a selection of Queen’s best songs.

The love of music and film have always walked hand-in-hand at the Oscars®. Best Original Song nomination include Shallow – Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s and Best Original Score Academy Award® nominations.

Unfortunately, it’s not all upbeat news, there is some controversy.

The Oscars® bring about celebrations and some controversy every year and this year is no different.

The Bohemian Rhapsody movie is loved by many. Nevertheless, some of the press accused the film of “straight-washing” after the screening of one of the movie’s trailers.

Bohemian Rhapsody is not the only film to have been criticised. The Green Book movie, has been nominated for 5 Oscars® but some criticism surrounds it with people having negative things to say about Green Book’s historical accuracy. That being said, the film features excellent music from top artists like Sam Smith.

Movies and short films can land themselves in hot water when it comes to the accuracy of their portrayal of real-life events. Did the Oscar®-nominated short film Detainment get its facts straight? The topic of this short film is based on a true story. Some people think that the movie’s portrayal of events was not as they really happened.

Lastly, the host of the Oscars® plays an important role on the night and has seen many A-listers hosting this prestigious event. The comedian Kevin Hart was going to be the award show’s host for 2019 but stepped down from being the host because of controversial comments that he made in the past on Twitter.

Controversy aside, we are looking forward to seeing how the Oscars® plays out this year. Are you?
