Top pop albums and songs streamed in 2019, in South Africa
2019 has been an exciting year for pop music fans across South Africa. The JOOX team explored pop music trends, the pop albums and songs that were streamed most often as well as new album releases.
2019 pop music trends
Several new pop music trends have emerged in 2019.
- Pop artists are releasing more music more regularly. Ariana Grande dropped two albums in the space of six months. Lana del Rey said that she is working on her next album for release in 2020 when she just released her latest album in August 2019.
- The traditional LP and CD formats of pop albums meant that records were a certain length with many songs. In 2019, we see the further development of the streaming age of music. Instead of an album, Miley Cyrus released her latest music as three EPs, each with six songs. Katy Perry dropped several singles this year with no word on the release of her next album.
- This year, pop stars have continued to experiment with other music genres. Music genres continue to merge, as pop artists collaborate with various artists or they mix it up on their own. Ed Sheeran’s ‘Beautiful People’ song features Khalid, who adds a touch of R&B magic to Ed’s pop song.
New pop music releases to come in 2019
2019 has been an eventful year for pop music, but it isn’t over just yet. Other top pop artists will release new songs and albums before the end of the year. Harry Styles and Liam Payne will drop new records before the year is over.

The talented 17-year-old artist wrote the songs and was involved with the production side of the album as well. The ‘Bad Guy’ and ‘Bury a Friend’ songs were especially popular tracks from her album.

Taylor Swift’s new platinum-selling ‘Lover’ album has been a massive success. According to Forbes, it is the top-selling album in the US in 2019, which made up 27% of all album sales within the week of the albums’ release. Jonas Brothers’ ‘Happiness Begins’ album
The Jonas Brothers are back in the limelight with chart-topping music again with their latest album. Their ‘Happiness Begins’ album achieved the number one spot on the US Billboard 200 straight after its release, as reported by Billboard.com.
